Nutella hot chocolate is a tasty twist on the classic hot chocolate. It’s chocolatey, creamy, and nutty – all thanks to a simple combo of milk simmered with the best homemade Nutella.

Just when you thought hot chocolate couldn’t get any better. A creamy jar of homemade Nutella takes it to the next level. All you need to do is simmer the Nutella with warm milk, give it a little stir, and there you have it. The most cozy cup of chocolate and hazelnut goodness.

Make a batch for the whole family or a party for two (save the rest for later). And if you’ve got some Nutella left over, keep reading to see how you can make the most of it.

Nutella Hot Chocolate Ingredients

The name pretty much says it all, but here’s a few notes to keep in mind when shopping for ingredients.

  • Milk: You can use either dairy or dairy-free milk such as oat milk, cashew milk or almond milk. Just note that certain dairy-free milks won’t be as creamy. And if you’re using a store-bought version, opt for unsweetened since the Nutella itself has sugar in it.
  • Nutella: While you can use the jarred stuff, I highly recommend making your own batch of Nutella right at home! It’s much healthier and is so easy to make with a food processor and minimal ingredients.
  • Toppings: This is completely optional, but I find that a dollop of coconut whipped cream and chocolate shavings really adds to the whole cozy experience. You can also add a dash of cacao powder, cinnamon, or top it off with marshmallows. There’s no right or wrong answer to this – you do you!

How To Make Nutella Hot Chocolate

  • Simmer. Add milk and Nutella to a small saucepan and bring it to a simmer.
  • Whisk away. Stir the mixture together until it’s perfectly creamy and well combined.
  • Serve. Pour the hot chocolate into separate cups and top it off with additional garnishes.

Ways To Store

  • To store: Pour the Nutella hot chocolate into airtight glass jars, and store in the fridge for 3-5 days. Don’t be alarmed if it separates as that’s normal.
  • To reheat: Add the hot chocolate to a saucepan and gently reheat it on medium heat, until warmed through.

Got Leftover Nutella?

The beauty of Nutella is how versatile it is. Turn fresh fruit into chocolate covered treats. Or spread it onto a warm slice of banana bread for monkey bread heaven. Here’s what to do with the remaining half cup.

  1. This is amazing! I’ve just made it with your homemade Nutella recipe. I did use more Nutella to make it thicker and worked well. Quick question- is the nutrition information for both servings or just the one? 5 stars

  2. I wonder if adding a whole big jar of nutella instead of 1/2 cup would make it a lot thicker like drinking chocolate?5 stars

  3. I’m puzzled with the nutritionals stated in the recipe – when I use Nutella label calories and the calories of whole milk, I end up with 700 calories per serving!! ((8Tx100cal)+(4Cx150cal))/2 servings=700cal. How are you getting to 456? Am I missing something? Likewise, The other nutritional values appear to be off as well, if they were calculated using Nutella and whole milk. For instance, the protein in 1C of whole milk is 8g, so if the recipe serves 4, each 700 calorie serving would be 16g of protein. Definitely sounds like a decadent dessert!

  4. This was a perfect hot chocolate after a 10k snowshoe. I topped it with some frothed milk and shaved chocolate.  Delicious!  All that I was missing was a fireplace and marshmallows but had the snow and freezing temperature.  ☃️❄️☃️❄️5 stars

  5. I just made this but i heat up the milk in microwave oven and put nutella in mug instead of the stove as am lazy to heat up the milk in pan sorry it is delicious Thanks Ramya5 stars

  6. I was just opening your website to get to the recipe to make Nutella for the second time (it is sooo good!!), when I saw this. Perfect idea, I thought, so I cleaned my Nutella cluttered Vitamix with milk, poured the stuff into a cup then into the microwave for a minute. Perfect!!! Never thought about Nutella hot chocolate, but I will now make it each time as a cleaning procedure for my Vitamix after I make the Nutella. I love all your recipes and for Christmas, I thought I will take my chance with your Prime Rib recipe. Lisa, you are the best!!!5 stars

    1. Glad you enjoyed this recipe Celine! Can’t wait for you to try my prime rib recipe over Christmas :) Excited to see the results.

  7. I don’t think I have ever wanted to drink a hot chocolate more than your Nutella one! Only 2 ingredients and yet it looks insanely delicious. Love the idea of chocolate shavings and whipped cream too!5 stars

  8. I kind of have a secret love affair with Nutella, so I’m super excited to find this recipe! I couldn’t believe it when I scrolled to the recipe card and saw that it really and truly needs just two ingredients – so darn easy! And as if it couldn’t get any easier, I’m thrilled that it can even be made ahead (just perfect when I’m extra-busy at holiday time)! Thank you!5 stars
