A homemade pumpkin spice latte is a cozy and delicious way to spend your autumn mornings (or afternoon). This version is warm, perfectly sweet and spiced, and dosed with strong black coffee for that “coffee shop at home” holiday treat.

Two cups of pumpkin spice lattes on a plate.

Okay, a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte is pretty good. But I can honestly say that making this pumpkin spice latte recipe at home is much more satisfying. You can make endless cups in your favorite mug, it’s lighter on your wallet, and tastes just as good – a triple win.

Once you’ve brewed some strong black coffee (or espresso shots for a traditional latte style) and combined it with a pot simmering the milk and all the pumpkin spices, your house is going to smell SO good. For me, there’s nothing more soothing than smelling autumnal flavors at the beginning of Fall.

Plus, this delightfully creamy latte always puts me in a better mood (especially on longer work days). So, just imagine how you’ll feel sipping on this cozy drink during the holidays!

What’s In This Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte?

Good news – you’ve likely got most of these ingredients on hand already, except maybe the pumpkin puree. So next time you’re at the market, grab a can (or two)!

  • Coffee: I’m brewing half a cup of strong coffee as I typically don’t make espresso at home. But if you have an espresso machine, two shots is all you need.
  • Milk: Almond milk or cashew milk are always my go-to non-dairy milks for warm drinks. But if you’re not dairy-sensitive, half and half or your favorite cream will lend a much creamier consistency.
  • Pumpkin Puree: What makes this pumpkin spice latte so tasty is the use of real pumpkin purée, which you can find in your local market’s canned section. Just make sure you don’t get pumpkin pie filling – there is a big difference!
  • Maple Syrup: This is always my default sweetener choice. But you can also use honey or agave.
  • Vanilla Extract: Just a touch goes a long way to tie all the flavors together. Here’s the vanilla extract I love to use by Simply Organic.
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice: You can buy pre-made pumpkin spice mix or make your own at home!

How To Make A Pumpkin Spice Latte

There’s quite a few ways to make a pumpkin spice latte, but if you don’t have a Vitamix or frother on hand (see tips below), simmering it in a pot is the way to go. Here’s how to do it.

  • Make the initial pumpkin mixture. In a small saucepan, whisk together the milk, pumpkin puree, and maple syrup over medium heat. Make sure that it doesn’t come to a boil (as it can easily boil over). Just let it simmer until it’s heated through.
  • Whisk in the rest of the ingredients. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the pumpkin pie spice, vanilla extract, and coffee.
  • Top it with the good stuff. Pour the mixture into your favorite mug and top it off with a dollop of whipped cream (I love to make my coconut whipped cream for this) and a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or extra pumpkin spice.

A Few Pumpkin Spice Latte Tips

Can I make this with a Vitamix?

If you have one, I highly recommend for an easier process! Just toss all the ingredients into the blender and blend for a few minutes until the blades warm up the mixture.

Can I make this with a milk frother?

Absolutely. In your cup, mix together the espresso, pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice and maple syrup. Froth the milk in your frother separately, then pour the milk into your cup with the espresso mixture. That’s it!

How can I make an iced pumpkin spice latte?

Blend up all the ingredients (except the milk) in a blender. Pour the coffee mixture over ice, then pour the milk over top until it’s perfectly creamy. Also, be sure to use cold brewed coffee instead of hot coffee.

  1. I have leftover brewed green tea……do you have any recipes for that? I am hoping you can come up with some hot drink for fall other than the usual green tea drinks at starbucks….DO you think I can substitute cold tea in this recipe? ( I know…kinda gross ) Maybe a fall TEA drink would be great too. I cannot have coffee in any shape or form because of digestive issues. Any suggestions would be very appreciated !!!!!

  2. Thanks for the recipe, I’ve wanted to try a pumpkin spiced latte for some time now. I’m in Australia and we don’t have the pumpkin spices you mention. Do you have a recipe to make the spices from others please?

    1. Hi Mel – I don’t have a recipe yet for a homemade pumpkin spice, but when I do, I will let everyone know!

  3. Dear Lisa,
Thank you so much for the Pumkin latte recipe.
Could I cook the Pumkin purée ( butternut, or Hokaido?)
myself? or would you prefer the canned version?
    Many regards from Germany

  4. The recipes I have tried were all delicious. Thanks Lisa, you never disappoint me.
This Latte is my new favorite!!!5 stars

    1. Thanks so much, Graciela! I’m thrilled that you love all of my recipes, and especially this pumpkin spice latte. :)

  5. This is the tastiest PSL I’ve ever made. The spice isn’t overpowering & the honey is just enough sweetness! This is a keeper recipe! Thanks Lisa!!5 stars

  6. I have never tried Pumpkin Spice Latte!!

Tempted to go to Costa Coffee and try it and if I like it, make it. I have never eaten Pumpkin either!!

I bought a candle and love the smell, ”Pumpkin Harvest” Yankee candle, quite expensive here in the UK, 14 pounds!

  7. Loved it my new favourite for the fall. I put it all in a sauce pan as your video, less mess.

Thanks Lisa you are my first go to when looking for recipes and you don’t disappoint.

    Thank you 🙏5 stars

  8. I am not a coffee drinker but decided to give this a try. Oh my goodness, this is DEElicious!  Such a treat, especially on those cold days. Great recipe!5 stars

  9. I used 1 cup of milk, 1tbsp of pumpkin puree, 1tbsp of maple syrup, and 1/4tsp pumpkin spice. It still turns out really good. I just don’t want too much milk in my latte so I adjusted it a bit but still turned out really good!5 stars

  10. This is so good. This was the only coffee I would buy from a famous coffee shop when they had it seasonally. When I changed my diet and found out how much sugar was in it, I knew I could never have that again. I made this before Thanksgiving to see how it was. Oh my gosh, it was so good. I made it again for family and friends for the leftover dinner since the desserts were all gone. Everyone loved it. One guy who swears he doesn’t like pumpkin, I did not tell them what was in it at first, wanted the recipe and was funny when he said I would sneak pumpkin into something just to convert him to a pumpkin lover. Lol Thanks so much for this recipe. It is now one of our favorites. Dessert, drink and happiness all in one.5 stars
