A jar of this homemade everything bagel seasoning is pure gold. It tastes just like Trader Joe’s everything bagel seasoning and can be used on virtually anything — avocado toast, roasted vegetables, anything with cream cheese or salmon, and so much more!
Why Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning Is the Best
I am hooked on this everything but the bagel seasoning. Initially, I made this for my version of a lox bagel — a large crispy smashed potato bagel (which I highly recommend for the tastiest breakfast). But then I found myself reaching for this jar more often than not, let me tell you why:
- It’s the best kind of flavor enhancer. Not only does it add a subtle crunchy texture, but it also lends nutty, garlicky, and oniony flavors all at once. YUM.
- It can be stored for up to one year. With how delicious it is, I recommend making a double batch, so that you always have some on hand. Plus, you can make a few jars for edible gifts!
Everything Bagel Seasoning Ingredients
The six ingredients – flaky sea salt, white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, dried minced onion, poppy seeds, and dried minced garlic – are pretty straightforward. But here are a few things to keep in mind regarding substitutions:
- For sesame seeds: If you only want to buy one type of sesame seeds, I’d stick with white sesame seeds. Otherwise, having both is best!
- For the dried minced garlic & onion: Don’t use garlic or onion powder, the chunkier minced texture is key here. Anything finely powdered will end up at the bottom of the jar.
- For the flaky sea salt: It’s best to use this kind of salt versus coarse salt, which can be even saltier. And if you prefer a less salty taste, you can always adjust and reduce the amount I’ve provided.

Making It + Storage Tips
To make the seasoning, stir everything in a small bowl and store it in a small sealed container in a cool, dark, and dry place such as your pantry. It will stay good for up to one year. And if you need storage ideas, I love to use these glass spice jars for all my homemade seasonings.
Tasty Ways To Use The Seasoning
- Season healthy snacks. I love to sprinkle a little on top of jammy boiled eggs or a small bowl of cottage cheese for a protein-heavy snack. You could also sprinkle it onto cream cheese slathered on cucumber slices, bell pepper chunks, or celery sticks.
- Add flavor to your breakfast. Besides adding to bagels and anything with smoked salmon, it’s great sprinkled on Greek scrambled eggs and egg salad.
- Sprinkle onto roasted vegetables. This is a great way to add garlicky onion flavors to vegetables such as roasted potatoes, roasted broccoli, roasted Brussels sprouts, or baked zucchini fries.
- Garnish creamy dips. A few ideas could be guacamole, French onion dip, hummus, baba ganoush, or a white bean dip.
- Season cooked proteins. Use this anywhere you would normally add these seasonings individually, such as baked chicken or baked salmon.
More Homemade Seasonings
- Fajita Seasoning: The holy grail for any fajita dinner.
- Taco Seasoning: The perfect seasoning for Mexican ground beef recipes.
- Cajun Seasoning: This is one of my all-time favorites for a spicy kick.
- Za’atar Spice: The best way to add an earthy, savory flavor.

How long will this last in a mason jar?
This should stay good in your pantry for up to one year!
One of my favorite sections of this site are your spice/herb/seasonal blends. I use all of them. I recycle jars for that purpose. So, thanks!
