Is Banana With Almond Butter A Healthy Snack?

Bananas and almond butter are a match made in heaven. It’s filling, nutritious, and the perfect balance between sweet and salty. Which is probably why you’ve seen tons of people make their morning “almond butter and banana toast”.

Bananas are a great source for Vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. Then adding a layer of almond butter will give you extra vitamins, fiber, healthy fats and protein. So the combination of the two makes for a great energy booster and overall healthy snack.

Slicing the banana and placing the banana slices on a baking sheet with a dollop of almond butter.

Just 5 Ingredients You Need

  • Bananas: Depending on how big your bananas are, you’ll need 2 large or 3 medium ones.
  • Almond Butter: I’m using almond butter for this recipe, but feel free to switch it up! You can also use peanut butter, cashew butter, or any seed butter.
  • Chocolate Chips: You could use dark or milk chocolate chips (I prefer dark).
  • Coconut Oil: One teaspoon will do the trick to help soften the frozen chocolate shell.
  • Chia Seeds: Chia seeds are optional in this recipe. But they add a delicious texture and extra nutrients to make this a healthy snack!

Do You Need Coconut Oil?

While adding coconut oil to the chocolate isn’t necessary, it can help to soften the frozen chocolate. You don’t want to bite into the chocolate and have it crumble apart. So mixing in the oil will help soften the outer shell ever so slightly.

Just add in about one teaspoon – that’s it! And don’t worry, it won’t add a coconut-y flavor to the chocolate.

How To Make Frozen Banana Bites

First, you’ll need to prep a baking sheet with parchment paper. Then, follow these easy steps.

  1. Slice the bananas. Peel and slice the bananas into rounds about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Spread the almond butter. Place half of the banana slices on the baking sheet and spread a layer of almond butter on top. Stir chia seeds into the almond butter for added crunch and nutrients.
  3. Create a sandwich. Place another banana slice on top to create a mini sandwich. Repeat this for the rest of the banana slices.
  4. Freeze the bites. Place the bites in the freezer until solid – about an hour.
  5. Melt the chocolate. Heat the mixture in 20 second increments, stirring in between until its silky smooth. Add coconut oil to make it extra smooth and dip-able.
  6. Dip the bites. Remove the frozen banana bites from the freezer. Dip each frozen banana bite into the melted chocolate so that half of each bite is coated. Then place it back on the baking sheet.
  7. Freeze once more. Place both baking sheets back into the freezer to let the chocolate harden.
  8. Enjoy! Once frozen, you’re ready to enjoy or store away in freezer safe containers.

A Few Things To Keep In Mind

  • Make sure your bananas are frozen. It’s a simple tip, but you want your bananas nice and frozen before dipping.
  • Dip as fast as possible! When you take the frozen banana bites out of the freezer to dip in chocolate, the bananas will soften quickly. So try to do this step as fast as possible.
  • Scrape the excess chocolate. After dipping, scrape the bottom of the banana side on the edge of the chocolate bowl. This way you won’t have a puddle of chocolate under each bite.

How Long Can They Freeze For?

You can store these bites in freezer-safe containers for up to 1-2 months. To prevent them from sticking to each other, freeze in separated layers. Create an even layer of bites, then separate the second the layer with parchment or wax paper.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Then set aside.
  • Peel and slice the bananas into rounds about 1/4 inch thick. You don't want them too thick, otherwise the bites will be very thick to bite into when sandwiched together.
  • Place half of the banana slices on the baking sheet and spread a layer of almond butter on top. If you'd like to add chia seeds to the almond butter (which I recommend), stir that into the almond butter before topping on the banana slices.
  • Place another banana slice on top to create a mini sandwich. Repeat this for the rest of the banana slices.
  • Freeze the banana bites until solid, about an hour.
  • Add the chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl. Heat the mixture in 20 second increments, stirring in between until it's silky smooth. If you'd like to add coconut oil to make the chocolate a little softer and more dip-able (see tip above) you can add it here and stir with the chocolate.
  • Remove the frozen banana bites from the freezer. Dip each frozen banana bite into the melted chocolate so that half of each bite is coated. Then place it back on the baking sheet.
  • Place both baking sheets back into the freezer to let the chocolate harden.
  • Once frozen, you're ready to enjoy or store away in freezer safe containers for up to 1-2 months.

Lisa's Tips

  • When you take the frozen banana bites out of the freezer to dip in the chocolate, the bananas will soften quickly, so try to do this step as fast as possible.
  • I also recommend scraping the bottom side of the banana bite on the edge of your chocolate bowl. This way you won't have a puddle of chocolate under each bite.

  1. Loved these! I was concerned the almond butter would be messy. But it actually was really easy (with the Whole Foods fresh almond butter and a littler spoon). My one suggestion is we needed more like a cup of chocolate chips and needed to melt more half way through. Maybe we were dipping too much since we are new to anti-inflammatory diets and trying to replace Reese’s peanut butter cups. But since that was the toughest part of the whole thing I’d say this is a winner!5 stars

  2. Idea for the messy almond butter – put in a piping bag, chill slightly, then pipe on to the banana slices. I wonder too if whipping the almond butter using a mixer would fluff it up a bit and make application easier.

  3. First time I tried making these I ate so many during the sandwich to freezer step that I ultimately had to abandon the chocolate dipping step. No kidding. Irresistible little buggers! Second time around I just made a couple bananas worth extra.5 stars

  4. When putting the almond chia mixture onto the bananas, put the mixture into Ziploc bag and cut the end off. So you just squeeze a little out onto each banana piece. Or use a disposable pastry bag.

  5. I loooooove these banana bites!!! I make them time and time again and they always turn out delicious. Definitely not as pretty as Lisa’s, but still taste great! They’re great for when you want something sweet but don’t want to indulge in a huge dessert. These hit the spot! I really like the added chia seeds to sneak some healthiness in there too.5 stars

  6. Oh, I LOVED making these! I felt like we had a tiny little candy factory in the kitchen that day. These are the perfect little treat and they’re just so cute. (Tip – Have a small bowl of water nearby to dip the tips of your fingers in to help flatten or shape the peanut butter if needed.)5 stars

  7. I also think you could melt and use Lilly’s sugar free chocolate chips to cut sugar for the chocolate. These look so yummy – must try!

  8. This recipe helped me get thru my night time ice cream cravings. I love these and they are so satisfying. Sometimes I sprinkle them with organic unsweetened coconut flakes too as I saw in a meal prep video and boy they make me happy 😃 my mom is a diabetic and loves ice cream too so I make this for her when she comes over , I use Lily’s chocolate sweetened with stevia and she just absolutely loves them too. 5 stars

  9. Hello, Lisa, here from YouTube, cos I was hoping to find calories and I did :-D
I’d like to know if the calories are referred to just one portion and how much that portion would be.
I’m trying to be careful, cos I could easily eat them all, all at once ^.^’
    Thank you :-)

  10. This is one of my favorite treat! (also my 3 year old loves it)
I did not dip the chocolate, but i let my kid drizzled the chocolate on top of the frozen bananas. :)5 stars

  11. I just had to tell you I love love love your recipes and videos!! I’ve already lost some weight and gave more energy incorporating a few things into my diet from your recipes.

Anyway, I had leftover chocolate after dipping my banana samiches and I tossed some raw almonds with cinnamon in the chocolate to make bark. Addictive!🥰5 stars

  12. OMG, just made these. Soooo easy! I love these kinds of recipes because they look harder than they are! Adding the chia seeds to the nut butter/seed butter is genius, it adds a crunch. Because these are frozen it’s also makes it less likely for me to “pig out” on them. I love the added tips you give with each recipe. You are one of the few vloggers to follow because when you say something is easy to make, it really is!5 stars

    1. Hi there – So glad you loved these banana bites! And you know I’m all for easy recipes here :)

  13. Hello! I am in LOVE with these adorable banana bites! Thank you for this simple and wonderful recipe, Lisa! *TIP* I placed a bowl of water next to my station and after placing a dab of nut butter onto the bananas slices, I dipped one finger into the water and touched the top of the butter and was able to shape it evenly and neatly. I repeated the water finger dab for every peanut butter coin and it worked like a charm! (I took the idea from making macaroons.) They turned out beautifully! Thanks again!5 stars

    1. Hi Maribel- Wonderful! I’m so glad these turned out perfectly :) Definitely a perfect healthy treat to keep on hand.

  14. Oh man these are delicious! The perfect treat to keep in the freezer when you’re craving something sweet. Brilliant to add chia seeds to the almond butter. A healthier option for a dessert, and the bite size is just the right portion amount. As always, amazing job Lisa. Thank you! 5 stars

      1. The perfect sweet bite without guilt! The hardest part is getting the almond butter of the spoon. Not so hard! But I see suggestions and will try again. These are going to be a freezer staple.5 stars

  18. Hey Lisa,

Another home run….. so simple, fast and easy.  I made some with almond butter, some with natural peanut butter and used up the last of some almond hazelnut butter I had on hand.
For some reason the rating would not let me choose this as a 5 star so I’ll add my own rating…. it’s a PERFECT 10!!! 5 stars

    1. Hi Gail- I’m so glad you loved this frozen sweet treat! Love the idea of using hazelnut butter too :)

  19. I’ve been watching your videos with my 4yr old daughter, she loves baking and making sweet treats. This was so simple to follow, even with her help, and an excellent bribe for completing Nursey Home schooling today. Theses taste so yummy, thank you for your recipes and videos – we’ve tried a few already and definitely making the lockdown in the UK more palatable. 5 stars

    1. Hi Veni- What a perfect and fun recipe to make with your daughter. Happy to hear both of you have enjoyed this frozen sweet treat :)

  20. Absolute perfection!! I tried a small batch of just one banana and they were soooooo delicious I polished the whole thing off!!! Will make a bigger batch next time.  Oh and for spooning the almond butter I used a small measuring spoon to help in dishing it out.  Can’t wait for my next recipe! 5 stars

    1. Amazing! Thrilled that you loved these banana bites. You can also put the almond butter in a ziplock bag and cut the corners to make a small piping bag :)

  21. Looks delicious but I am not a big banana fan, it’s okay in a smoothie. Do you think Apple’s would be a good substitute ?

  22. My family and I just finished the last bite. Amazing!! Perfect for the hot weather. I am so going to make a bigger portion next time and keep it in the freezer for some snack time. Love it. 5 stars
